Arming Police with guns in Fiji is not likely to take place soon under the watch of the new Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu.

While discussions for the use of arms for the Fiji Police Force had surfaced from Government and few security agencies, Mr Tudravu did not support the proposal.

Mr Tudravu told reporters at the police headquarters at Nabua, Suva, that “giving guns to police officers for their operation purposes will not solve the increase in crimes currently plaguing the country.”

He said, at least for now, approving guns would mean stricter guidelines and proper consultations.

“At this point, we are not recommending to arm police officers,” Mr Tudravu said.

“Under the Police Act, we are empowered to arm. I am just waiting for that report to come and Government and the line minister will work on it.”

Mr Tudravu reassured members of the public that the Fiji Police Force remained committed to improving its service delivery.

He said this included regaining the trust and confidence of Fijians.

“As for now, we are not recommending police officers to be armed,” Mr Tudravu said.
