'Non-iTaukei communities have nothing to fear from GCC'

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has reassured non-iTaukei communities that Fiji’s chiefs are responsible leaders who have the nation’s best interest at heart.
Speaking after the opening of the Great Council of Chiefs (Bose Levu Vakaturaga) meeting yesterday, Prime Minister Rabuka said there is no reason for fear or concern.
“The chiefs are very, very responsible, and they have the national interest at heart. There is nothing for anyone to fear,” he said.

Mr Rabuka highlighted the importance of the chiefs’ role in promoting values and respect within communities, particularly among young people.
He said government and traditional leaders would work together to encourage respect for women, human dignity, and social responsibility.
He also spoke about the council’s ongoing discussions, which focus on key national issues.
While details of all topics remain with the council’s chair and secretary, Prime Minister Rabuka emphasised that his participation reflects the government’s commitment to working closely with Fiji’s traditional leadership.
“Our cooperation with the chiefs is about ensuring the welfare of all Fijians and guiding our communities with responsibility and fairness,” he said.
The Prime Minister’s assurance comes amid national conversations about unity and the role of traditional leaders in supporting inclusive governance and social cohesion.
