Elders of the vanua (rural community) and lotu (religion) can play a pivotal role when it comes to the war against drugs in the country.
Tui Nadogo, Ratu Ilisaniti Malodali says the war against illicit drugs, is a task the Fiji Police Force cannot do alone. At the beginning of the year, Police in the Northern Division conducted raids around remote areas uprooting plants believed to be marijuana.
These successful operations have been attributed to close-knit information sharing between members of the community and police. Ratu Ilisaniti insists that more awareness needs to be done with the vanua, and lotu involved.
