North welcomes Investment Fiji Act: Standing Committee

Ratepayers and business communities in the North welcome the Investment Fiji Act.
This was revealed by Standing Committee Chair Alvick Maharaj during their consultation at the Chamber of Commerce in Labasa.
Mr Maharaj said the bill was commended because people understood the support that was going to be provided to the domestic investors.

He said there was positive discussion regarding the Investment Fiji Act and business operators shared innovative ideas on moving forward.
“The response from the public has been great as now they are looking forward to it being passed and that investment can come to the North as well and not just foreign investors,” Mr Maharaj said.
“The importance is given to the domestic investors as to how they can collaborate as at the moment we cannot match the massive export manufacturing from Asia.
“Through Investment Fiji, we can collaborate with a domestic investor, let’s say a manufacturing industry to somebody who is a massive exporter in the Asian region, before they can begin contract manufacturing,” he said.
Members of the Standing Committee on Justice, Law and Human Rights also conducted a site visit to Yaduataba island, the sanctuary for Crested Iguana and the Naag Mandir, Floating Island in Labasa, Waisali Rainforest Reserve in Savusavu as a tentative World Heritage Site as part of their consultation on the Heritage Bill 2021.
The Committee also visited Seaqaqa, Savusavu and Taveuni.
