Schools in the Northern Division will remain closed tomorrow to give families more time to recover from the heavy rain and flash flooding that affected many communities this week.

Minister for Education Aseri Radrodro confirmed the decision today.

“Schools in the Northern Division will remain closed tomorrow, Thursday 27 November 2025, to allow families in affected areas sufficient time to clean up following the recent heavy rain and flash flooding," Mr Radrodro said.

"Schools are expected to reopen on Friday, subject to favourable weather conditions.”

The latest Situation Report from the Ministry’s Emergency Operations Centre shows that while weather conditions across Vanua Levu and Taveuni are improving, flood-prone communities are still clearing debris and facing access issues.

Key updates include:
• Receding floodwaters and improving weather
• Power, water and traffic normalising in most areas
• Transport disruptions in communities with damaged crossings
• Ongoing risks from soil erosion and blocked drains

Based on assessments from the Ministry’s Disaster Risk Reduction team, the additional closure day is needed to ensure students and teachers can return safely.

Heads of Schools have also been reminded that under the School Operating Procedures, they may make attendance decisions on Friday if conditions deteriorate—and must keep the Minister and Permanent Secretary informed.

Schools in Viti Levu will remain open tomorrow, but parents are urged to use discretion given the unstable weather. Heads of Schools have been advised to monitor their environment closely and make decisions in line with safety protocols.

The Ministry said it will continue working closely with the National Disaster Risk Management Office and Divisional Emergency Centres and will provide further updates if conditions change.

“The safety and well-being of our students, teachers, and school communities remain our top priority,” the Ministry stated.
