Nubukalou Creek Revamp To Feature Boardwalks, Cafes

Boardwalks and cafes could possibly be features of a revamped Nubuka­lou Creek according to the Minister for Local Government Premila Kumar.

The famous creek in the heart of Suva, which flows from Greig Street through Renwick Road, Thomson Street and out to sea from Usher Street, is due for beautifi­cation work.

Ms Kumar said there was an initial de­sign by an architect, but they would be going over the design and would then pro­ceed to call for tenders.

Discharging waste

“Any town or city which has a water en­vironment, has to appreciate it. We try to build a city around it and here we have a stream, Nubukalou, where people are just throwing garbage in it,” Ms Kumar said.

“Some people are discharging waste in there. All that needs to change.”

Ms Kumar said private partners would work closely on this venture.

She said this was needed to increase the aesthetic appeal of the city.

The work

Works on Nubukalou Creek will include dredging to make the creek deeper and to clear the creek bed of rubbish.

Walls along the creek will also be strengthened. There is a possibility of mu­rals on the old buildings along the creek side.

Ms Kumar hinted those designs would ac­commodate handicraft sellers in anticipa­tion of cruise liners.

Ms Kumar said such projects needed to take off for the betterment of Suva and its citizens.
