They celebrate numbers, but numbers don’t put food on the table. Numbers don’t pay rent!

Senior lone female Group of 16 (G16) Opposition MP Premila Kumar made these statements while replying to the Government’s economy forecast and economy performance update yesterday.

“How many Fijians have felt relief at the supermarket or when paying utility bills?

“How many Fijians have seen their hard work translate into a better life for their family with an increase in duties, taxes and Value Added Tax (VAT)?

“For many Fijians, the answer is clear: life has not improved. Instead, the cost of living has skyrocketed. Essential goods and services are becoming luxuries.

“This government has not spared bread and butter - a daily staple.

“Government talks about economic growth, but the growth seemed to be only for the privileged few, the multinationals, the well-connected elites.”

She added that majority of our people are left out, struggling on the margins.
