Raluve Tubuna Tadu Varuru stood out as the star of the TISI Sangam College of Nursing and Health Care Education graduation yesterday, being the only Bachelor of Nursing Science graduate to receive five prestigious awards.

The 25-year-old from Nasinu Village, Navatu, Cakaudrove, was overcome with emotion during the ceremony at Labasa's Civic Centre as she remembered her late grandmother and mentor, Latileta Lakai, to whom she dedicated her achievements.

"My grandmother raised me since childhood and always wished to see us, the twin sisters, graduate," Ms Varuru said tearfully.

The eldest of three siblings, Ms Varuru was recognised for her exceptional performance, receiving awards for Academic Excellence in Nursing Knowledge and Mental Health, Nursing Practice, Population Health, Personal Professional Development and Research, and Overall Academic Excellence.

Her journey to nursing began after completing a Bachelor of Dietetics and Nutrition at Fiji National University in 2020.

Feeling a deeper calling to serve the sick beyond the confines of an office, she pursued further studies to become a nurse.

"I believe that if we have a dream and passion to do something productive, we should go for it," she said.

"I love reading, and this hobby is my biggest secret to success."

Ms Varuru's parents, Titilia Leba, a pre-school teacher, and Peter Earley, a caretaker in Cakaudrove, expressed their pride in her resilience and determination.

"We are proud and blessed to have a daughter like Varuru who never gives up," they said.

Ms Varuru's success is a testament to her dedication and the support of her family. Her achievements not only honour her late grandmother's dream but also set a shining example for aspiring nurses across Fiji.
