The Suva Magistrate Court is yet to confirm the venue for the trial of former Assistant health minister, Alexander O’Connor.

O’Connor appeared before Magistrate Pulekeria Low at the Suva Magistrate Court yesterday with three counts of prohibition on use of state resources to campaign.

It was alleged that on November 233, 2022, O’Connor, whilst in public office, conducted campaign activities and distributed FijiFirst candidate flyers inside the Tukavesi Health Centre in Savusavu.

During the court proceeding, Fiji Independent Commission against Corruption (FICAC) lawyer, Rajiv Pathak informed the court that the Pre-Trial Conference (PTC) had been finalised and requested for a hearing date.

Given that this was a Savusavu matter, questions arose about the venue of the trial.

Mr Pathak argued that it is a Savusavu matter and should be dealt with at Savusavu, however, the defense lawyer, Matalita Koroibola asked that PTCs be dealt with in Suva when the matter was before Resident Magistrate Ms Kiran.

Magistrate Low informed the court that only the Chief Magistrate had the powers to transfer the files.

Both parties were ordered to file and serve finalised Pre-Trial Conference minutes by close of business yesterday.

The case has been adjourned to October 17 for mention to fix a hearing date and determine the trial venue.

O’Connor’s bail has been extended.
