Officer Charged with Assault Transferred to High Court

Police Prosecutor, Shelveen Sharma told the court they had made an application to transfer the matter to the High Court in Suva, upon which the request was granted.

The Nausori Magistrate’s court has transferred the assault case involving a 21-year-old Police officer to the High Court in Suva.

Constable Apimeleki Vakarusabola Colamoto appeared before Magistrate Samanunu Vaniqi on Friday with one count of act intended to cause grievous harm after he allegedly assaulted a Vilikesa Bari on November 17, this year.

Police Prosecutor, Shelveen Sharma told the court they had made an application to transfer the matter to the High Court in Suva, upon which the request was granted.

The court bailed Colamoto on the condition that: 

  • he pays $100 cash bail bond  two sureties
  • surrenders all his travel documents
  • stop departure order be issued against him
  • not to reoffend while on bail and  that he avoids interfering with the State witnesses.

Colamoto will appear at the High Court in Suva on January 20, 2025 where he is set to receive his diclosures and take his plea.

He has been given time to consult a Legal Aid lawyer.
