An investigation is underway to determine the origin of an oil spill that occurred at Nasese yesterday.

The Director for Environment, Sandeep Singh, and her team visited the site to assess the extent of the spill.

When contacted last night, Peter Wise, the Permanent Secretary for the Office of the Prime Minister, confirmed that an investigation would be carried out, and a statement would be issued in due course.

Chief executive officer for Fiji Ports Corporation Limited, Vajira Piyasena said they were still working to locate the source of the spillage

He added that the matter has been reported to the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji (MSAF), as border state control falls within their jurisdiction.

Inquiries regarding the incident have been directed to Sesoni Komaisoso, the acting CEO for MSAF.

Meanwhile, on her way to work yesterday, Elisabeta Waqa voiced her concern about the strong diesel odour along the shoreline.

She shared her disappointment and sadness over the impact on marine life in the area, noting that the usual fish she used to observe were nowhere to be found.

“I have never encountered anything like this since I started coming to the foreshore over a year ago,” Ms Waqa said, highlighting the unique and alarming nature of the incident.
