The Online Safety Commission has expressed concern over the circulation of graphic images of a deceased person on social media, warning that the material is causing further trauma to grieving families.
In a statement yesterday, the commission said the images being shared were “highly distressing” and showed the deceased “in a vulnerable and exposed state”.
The commission urged members of the public not to share, repost, forward or publish the material on social media platforms, messaging applications or online forums.

“We strongly urge members of the public to refrain from sharing, reposting, forwarding, or publishing such material across any social media platform, messaging application, or online forum.”
The commission acknowledged public concern surrounding the circumstances of the death but stressed the importance of allowing lawful and independent processes to proceed transparently.
It said the circulation of graphic images undermined human dignity and could cause serious emotional distress to surviving family members and affected persons.
“Regardless of the circumstances surrounding a person’s death, every individual is entitled to dignity and respect.”
The commission also reminded the public that harmful online conduct could raise concerns under the Online Safety Act 2018.
“We encourage all social media users to consider the emotional harm and wider consequences that may arise from sharing graphic and sensitive material online.”
The statement warned that continued circulation of the images risked retraumatising affected family members while official processes remained ongoing.
“Public discussion and scrutiny should not come at the expense of basic human dignity and compassion.”
The commission also called on social media administrators and platform operators to take prompt action to stop further dissemination of the material.
It extended condolences to the grieving family and loved ones.
