Opposition Member of Parliament Ketan Lal has urged Government to review the reduction of nightclub opening hours.

Mr Lal said it was important to conduct a reassessment of operating hours to identify its impact on business owners, communities and the Fijians economy.

Last July, Parliament passed the Liquor Amendment Bill which mandated the opening hours for selling liquor 11am to 1am for taverns, 1pm to 12am for restaurants daily and nightclubs from 5pm to 1am daily.

Mr Lal said the intent behind the legislation was to address the safety of people and concerns against brawls, robberies, and attacks in areas close to nightclubs.

The results over the past year he claimed indicated that these measures had not been effective, meaning that longer opening hours are needed.

“The reduction in operating hours has had significant adverse effects on our local economy and the livelihoods of many Fijians,” he said.

“Nightclubs and their associated businesses, including food stall vendors and other service providers, have seen their incomes drastically reduced.”

Mr Lal claimed these sectors were affected by the COVID-19 pandemic and the current legislation exacerbated their struggles.

He said was important to recall the original purpose of creating special zones for nightclubs to boost tourism and provide safe, controlled environments for tourists and locals to enjoy their nightlife.

“By limiting the operating hours of these venues, we undermine this purpose and risk diminishing the attractiveness of our tourist destinations,” Mr Lal said.

“With the budget announcement for the new fiscal year approaching, reverting the nightclub opening hours to their previous state which could presents an opportunity to boost our local economy.

“Increased spending will stimulate related sectors, including restaurants, taxi services and other transportation providers, further contributing to economic growth and job creation.”

Call for long operating hours

Down Under Pub Owner Caroline Wainiqolo Cooke concurs with Mr Lal’s sentiments.

The prominent Suva-based pub operator said the reduced operating hours of nightclubs have affected a lot of business sectors.

“The Zoning needs to be re-established and enforced for safety and controlled environment,” Ms Cooke said.

“A 3am closing would work better to give police time to clear the streets and people going to work don’t get any hassles,” Ms Wainiqolo said.

She said nightclubs had never been the cause of brawls or theft on the streets.

“Police need to be more visual and monitor the streets, as we do our job monitoring our patrons inside the establishment,” she said.
