Opposition MP Seeks Death Medical Report
The MP said losing a son in his prime has caused immense stress for the grieving family.

Opposition Crossbencher MP Penioni Ravunawa is calling on the Ministry of Health and Medical Services to release the preliminary medical report on Ilaisa Toroca immediately.
Mr Toroca, 23, died last Saturday at Labasa Hospital after alleged medical negligence at Waiyevo Hospital, Taveuni.
His father, Sitiveni Johnson, 49, claims that medical negligence and poor decision-making of the dentist and doctor at Waiyevo Hospital led to his son’s death.

“The doctor in Labasa told me then that my son had been transferred to the Labasa Divisional Hospital on time and he would have survived.”
Mr Johnson said his son died a few hours after being flown from Taveuni to Labasa Hospital the same day.
Close relatives farewell the late Ilaisa Toroca, 23, who was laid to rest at Pagai Village in Taveuni on August 22, 2024.
“My son’s health deteriorated badly in Taveuni on Friday and I kept requesting the doctor to send my son that same day,” he claimed.
The two-tooth extraction turned fatal for the former Legend’s Fuel Station bowser attendant after continuous bleeding worsened his condition. Mr Ravunawa said the release of this report would at least bring some relief to the aggrieved family and restore some confidence in the public towards medical healthcare in Fiji.
“The efficient and effective release of information by health authority is critical when such a situation arises,” he said.

“Further delay in the release of official report only brought about further frustration among our people, especially the close relatives,” he added.
