Over a Thousand Informal Residents Due for Eviction

The Ministry of Housing has identified 1062 informal residents due for eviction.
This includes 148 households from the Veidogo Settlement, over 500 households from the Nadiri Settlement in Tacirua and 414 households from the Fiji Muslim League.
Line Minister Maciu Nalumisa revealed this in Parliament yesterday.

“To address this pressing issue, the Ministry has developed a comprehensive five-year Relocation and Resettlement Policy, along with its accompanying Standard Operating Procedure, and a detailed Relocation and Resettlement Plan for households at risk of eviction,” Mr Nalumisa said.
“In this financial year alone, the Ministry is focused on the immediate relocation and resettlement of 1062 households facing eviction notices.
“To ensure a smooth process, the Ministry is working closely with other Government agencies, the iTLTB, and Ministry of Lands, collaboratively advancing the relocation and resettlement efforts.”
Programme
Mr Nalumisa said the ministry currently manages 48 development leases for the Informal Settlement Upgrading Programme (ISUP), consisting of 44 iTLTB leases and four state leases.
He said these leases cover 21 settlements in the Western Division, 14 in the Northern Division, and 13 in the Central Division.
The Ministry’s ISUP is implemented through five key phases ranging from Preliminary, Consultancy, Civil Works, Final Survey, and Issuance of Title.
In this financial year 2024-2025, the Ministry plans to issue leases for three key areas: Cuvu, Sigatoka – 113 residential lots, Waidamudamu, Nausori – 266 residential lots, and Ledrusasa, in Nadi – 76 residential lots,” Mr Nalumisa said.
“Other six Ministry development leases such as Sakoca, Tacirua (216 lots), Tavela (80 lots), Field 4 (115 lots), Tore (59 lots) and Valewaquyaya, Ba are currently at the Construction Works phase and is anticipated to be ready for issuance of title in the next financial year 2025- 2026.”
