The Suva Corrections Centre — built in 1912 and now holding 340 inmates in a facility designed for 225 — is set to be relocated to Naboro.

Acting Commissioner Auta Moceisuva said the ageing infrastructure could no longer cope, with sewers overflowing and cells flooding during heavy rain.

"The solution when I came in — we have to move the entire facility," Mr Moceisuva said.

The planned Naboro site would be self-sustained, housing a courthouse, staff quarters, and facilities for all categories of convicted prisoners.

Mr Moceisuva said the relocation was also part of the government's broader justice sector reform programme, supported by the Australian Government through the Ministry of Justice.
