Fiji Corrections Service Acting Commissioner Senior Superintendent Salote Panapasa was nominated as a governing board member of the Asian and Pacific Conference of Correctional Administrators (APCCA).

She is the first female representative in Fiji and the Pacific to receive such a status.

“The nomination is a unique achievement that will help me gain better insight into more training opportunities and look into more partnerships with other countries,” she said.

The FCS Acting Commissioner headed a five-member Fijian delegation that traveled to Vietnam for the 2023 APCCA conference.

Her team included the director Rehabilitation, Superintendent Waisale Soqonakalou, supervisor Southern Division, Superintendent Alevio Turaganivalu; the Commandant, Assistant Superintendent Rusiate Batiratu; and the acting senior Psychologist, Varanisese Ratukonadi.

Commissioner Panapasa has attended more than seven APCCA meetings.

“Fiji has been blessed with participation in these international engagements,” she said.

“I want to acknowledge Singapore, Malaysia, Hong Kong and Queensland Corrections that assisted greatly in the FCS’ transition from containment to corrections from 2008 until today.

“Through their experience and systems, Fiji has been able to transit to the rehabilitation, training and infrastructural setting.”

APCCA has four other elected members, which include China, Malaysia, and Sri Lanka. Other rotating board members are Australia, Brunei and Vanuatu.

Hong Kong will host the 2024 event.
