Deciding to pardon long-serving inmates is a decision that can be emotionally impactful and signed off on by the individual.
President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere highlighted this while opening the yellow ribbon symposium in Labasa on Friday.
Gathered at this event were chiefs from Macuata Province, religious and community representatives.

“It’s not just about giving second chances, it’s about acceptance and willingness to forgive, I was emotional and happy to have witnessed and be part of that pardoning ceremony.”
Ratu Wiliame said there still needs to be more awareness at the grassroots level to educate communities about the acceptance of once convicted people.
He challenged community leaders and chiefs to make use of their role and to elevate common understanding among their people so convicted person(s) are better understood.
This symposium’s main objective is to educate and shed light on problems faced by FCS when it comes to sending inmates back to their communities.
