It is critical for children to have parental support in order to succeed in school.

Cabrini Buinimasi, a proud mother, expressed her feelings after witnessing her daughter, Laisane Buinimasi, graduate from Jai Narayan College in Suva yesterday.

She was among the 130 Year 13 students who were farewelled by the school. Mrs Buinimasi said it was important for parents to consistently speak to their children about the importance of education.

“Especially when the kids are well versed with social media around us, we do not want them to get distracted by it,” she said.

“We want them to concentrate also on what is ahead of them and not look back on things that drive them down but look at things that drive them up so that they move forward.

“Continuously push them and continue to speak to them so that they know this was not an easy year. It’s the parent’s responsibility to talk to their children and challenge them. Parents need to keep their children on their feet so that they know they have a better future ahead of them despite what we are experiencing.”

Mrs Buinimasi shared her joy at seeing her daughter graduate and expressed her optimism for her good future.

“She has finally graduated from secondary school and is looking forward to a challenging year ahead of her,” she said.

“We were okay because we had access to the internet so she was able to continue with her classes.

“There were times when we had to push her to concentrate on her classes. I am very proud of her.”

They said they were looking forward to Year 13 marks.

Laisane said she wanted to be a preschool teacher because she enjoyed working with children, and she planned to study Early Childhood Education at the University of the South Pacific.
