Year 13 student Anjali Prasad fulfilled a dream yesterday when she was badged as head girl of Sangam Sadhu Kuppuswamy Memorial College (SSKMC) in Nadi.

She acknowledged her parents, teachers and the experience she gained during her primary school days as the head girl of Nadi Sangam Primary School in 2014.

“I am very privileged to be given this honour,” she said.

“I still remember in 2015 when I joined the school. I was disheartened to learn that I was not named as one of the class prefects while in Year Nine.”

This did not discourage her, but she later learned she was among those named as school prefects.

“That changed my mindset. Since then it was my dream to be the head girl. My family is very supportive. As a student council member, I would be spending my Saturdays at school and my parents were supportive in every way they could,” Anjali said.

Her father and sisters are former scholars of the school.

“My sincere appreciation goes to the teachers who are dedicated and skilled, providing us with such a varied programme and constantly guiding us,” she said.

“They allow our individual talents to bloom and have showed us how, when put together, we make a winning team.”

Head boy Rikseel Chand said he was proud because his leadership skills were not shown when he joined in Year Nine.

“That same year I was a relieving prefect for a few months, but that didn’t discourage me,” he said.

“Seeing my teachers, colleagues and seniors display admirable leadership traits enabled me to believe in my own abilities to lead.

“A team is like a tool set, not one tool can do the entire job, but together we can. So let’s work together to work with a team spirit. It is challenging, but it is how we balance things.”

Rikseel’s sister was head girl of Votualevu College. He aspires to become a land surveyor or aircraft engineer. The school roll stands at 1125 with 59 teachers.
