Students will be able to achieve academic excellence if parents are good role models at home, says schoolteacher Suzie Kumar.

She believes this factor made her two daughters stand apart from other students in their school.

She was a proud mother yesterday when she watched her elder daughter Neha Kumar badged as headgirl of Sabeto Sangam School.

Neha’s younger sister Reah Kumar was inducted a Year Six prefect.

They were among 48 students inducted as prefects yesterday. The school roll is 306.

“Today is one of the proudest moments as parents to witness both our children inducted as school leaders, they have made both of us proud,” Ms Kumar said.

“We want to thank them for working hard in school and also at home.

“Their obedience and perseverance have resulted in today’s milestone achievement.”

She believes that children need to be taught moral values at home to help them in school or in the future.

Her husband, Nilesh Kumar, said parents had a very important role in being good role models to their children.

“Our children will display in school what they see and learn from home. This is very important that we as parents are good role models for them,” he said.

Neha, 13, thanked her parents for being the pillar behind all the success she had achieved in life.

The Chief Guest was the Republic of the Fiji Military Forces Officer-in-Charge, in Nadi, Lieutenant Semisi Vunibola. He reminded the prefects to carry out their role with humility and courage.

“You have been placed in the position of a leader. Whilst there are expectations, it is generally accepted that most men are not born leaders,’’ Lieutenant Vunibola said.

“Leadership is an art that can be learnt. Therefore you must learn as much as you can and what to do in order to lead.”
