The Minister for Justice, Siromi Turaga, is encouraging parents on Koro Island to send their children to Koro High School instead of schools in urban areas because of social issues affecting Viti Levu.

Mr Turaga made this statement during a talanoa session at Nasau Village in Mudu, Koro.

“We must ensure that we protect our children at all times on our island. When we have Year 13 at Koro High School, I encourage you to send your children here,” Mr Turaga said.

“The urban areas are different now. There are many dangerous things happening there, and we should ask ourselves whether we want our children to be affected by these issues or if we should protect them by sending them to Koro High School before they pursue tertiary education.”

Mr Turaga said new programmes would be introduced at the school.

“We will soon have TVET programmes at the school here. Last week, Government decided to provide a salary for the school chaplain, and it should.

“Education was introduced in Fiji by missionaries and it shall continue. When chaplains are not present in schools, it is observed that we have a different generation. We have a lot to do. This is a good day because we are here to listen to each other.”

The Tui Nasau of Nasau Village, Vonevate Vetaukula, said the village would soon buy internet data from Starlink Services to support the needs of its students.

There are about 300 students attending Koro High School.
