Parents and guardians are being urged to remain vigilant against fraudulent school voucher scams offering “free” or unrealistic discounts on back-to-school items.

The warning comes after the Fijian Competition and Consumer Commission (FCCC) identified a recurring trend in which consumers are targeted by scammers during the busy back-to-school period.

FCCC Chief Executive Officer Senikavika Jiuta advised parents and guardians to verify the legitimacy of promotions before sharing any personal or payment details.

She encouraged consumers to compare prices across multiple stores, inspect product labels to ensure goods are not substandard or counterfeit, and always confirm refund, return and exchange policies.

“If you encounter unfair pricing or suspicious trade practices, we strongly encourage you to report these matters to the FCCC,” Ms Jiuta said.

“Public vigilance plays a vital role in protecting consumer rights and holding businesses accountable.”

The FCCC has also warned traders against price gouging, misrepresentation and other unfair trade practices during this peak shopping period.

The Commission has intensified its monitoring and enforcement activities, with more than 180 inspections and surveillance exercises conducted since December, targeting school bags, lunch boxes, stationery and other essential school items.

Two rounds of price surveys have already been completed to establish baseline costs, with a third round scheduled for the coming week.

“Any trader found inflating prices beyond the legal limit during this period will face immediate enforcement action,” Jiuta warned.

She also encouraged parents to practice careful planning and budget management during the high-spending season.

“The cost of school supplies can place real pressure on household finances,” Ms Jiuta said.

“By comparing prices, choosing reliable retailers and staying alert to misleading sales tactics, parents can stretch their dollars further and ensure their children have the essentials for the new school year.”
