Parliament Passes 2025-2026 National Budget in Late Sitting

Parliament has passed the 2025-2026 National Budget tonight after sitting over 10pm.

This concludes a week-long debate on government spending plans for the next financial year.

36 Members of Parliament voted in favour and 12 against.

The Budget outlines $4.8 billion in total expenditure against projected revenue of $3.9 billion, resulting in a projected deficit of $886 million.

Addressing the House, the Speaker of Parliament Filimone Jitoko thanked Members for their participation.

“As I previously highlighted, this week-long deliberation stands as a cornerstone of our constitutional duty, ensuring transparency, accountability, and sound national planning. I extend my sincere appreciation to all Honourable Members for your thoughtful engagement throughout this important process.”

He also congratulated Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Strategic Planning, National Development and Statistics, Professor Biman Prasad, for successfully steering the budget through Parliament.
