Parliament to Appoint New Speaker Next Tuesday
The Opposition will have a chance to nominate someone for the role. The Constitution provides that the Speaker is independent and only subject to the Constitution and not any other law.

Parliament will convene to appoint a new Speaker in a special parliament sitting next Tuesday.
The new Speaker will replace Ratu Naiqama Lalabalavu after he was elected by Parliament to become President last Thursday. Last week, Prime Minister Rabuka reveled that retired judge Justice Filimoni Jitoko was his nominee for the Speaker.
