For Year 8 student Viasi Naituka of Drauniivi Primary School in Ra, shaking hands with Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka was a moment he will never forget.
The historic encounter took place during a long-awaited school excursion to Fiji’s Parliament yesterday — the first time in 20 years the school has been able to make the trip.
As the students entered the Parliament complex, they were warmly welcomed by officials before being led to a brief meet-and-greet with the Prime Minister.

It was there that Viasi and his classmates were given the rare opportunity to meet the country’s leader in person.
“I feel blessed when I shook the Prime Minister’s hand,” Viasi said.
“It was my first time meeting him, and I will remember this day forever. I want to learn more about how our leaders help our country.”
A total of 156 students, accompanied by 15 staff members, took part in the excursion. For many, it was their first visit to the city, making the experience even more memorable.
Head Teacher Pasikali Navukula described the tour as a milestone for the school.
“After 20 years, we successfully took our students on this educational trip. Some of our students had never been to the city before, so this experience was very special,” she said.
The excursion was made possible through support from Fiji Water, which covered nearly $5,000 of the costs, including $2,000 for student lunches.
“We are grateful to Fiji Water for supporting our students’ learning beyond the classroom,” Mr Navukula added.
He also thanked parents and guardians for their encouragement and continued support.
For Viasi, the moment has sparked new inspiration. “Meeting the Prime Minister made me realize that one day, I too can make a difference in Fiji,” he said.
