The Fiji Police Force is intensifying its drug operations during the festive.

This effort aims to disrupt the supply of drugs in the market.

This was when a surprise check was conducted at the Mua-i-Walu Port early last Sunday on a vessel arriving from the islands.

Acting Commissioner of Police Juki Fong Chew said that the trend usually occurs during the festive period when people are attempting to make money.

“I warn those intending to distribute drugs: the police will come down hard on them. If caught, we will follow the standard process, taking them to court where the punishment will be decided,” Mr Chew said.

“We don’t only deploy uniformed police; we also have civilian police officers who operate in nightclubs and streets. They work covertly, providing information to uniformed personnel for arrests.”

Assistant Commissioner of Police Operations (ACP), Livai Driu said Police would not rest and would continue the fight against drugs.

He reiterated the commitment to surprise checks in various locations, including roadside areas, to detect drugs and other illegal items.

“We intercepted a supply of drugs coming in from the islands, likely intended for Christmas and New Year,” ACP Driu said.

He added that a similar pattern has been observed throughout the division, expressing sadness at people being caught red-handed.

“At least four individuals were arrested on Sunday after drugs were found on them, with additional drugs discovered on the abandoned vessel.”

ACP Driu emphasised that the Sunday incident serves as a warning to those involved in illegal activities.

He stressed that the police will continue surprise checks at any time.
