Paulina Tuba did not know that saying goodbye to her husband on Monday morning would be their last.

Her husband, Maika Delana, 43, was involved in an accident while at work in Laucala Beach.

The late Mr Delana hailed from Kocoma Village in Qamea, Taveuni.

Ms Tuba described her husband as a humble, kind and a happy man.

“It is hard for me to accept my husband is no more. I did not expect him to leave us so soon,” Ms Tuba said.

“On Monday, we boarded the 6am bus and said goodbye to each other as we went to our respective workplaces. I did not know that would be our last conversation.

“I wish this was a bad dream and that he would come home after work. My husband was someone who I can always count on.

“We have two sons. The eldest is five years old and the other is one year and eight months. I don’t know how to explain to them that their father is no more.”

Ms Tuba said her husband treated them very well.

“I just started working five weeks ago and at times when I work late, he would wait for me with our children at the Police Post near our home,” she said.

“I received a call from my husband’s workplace on Monday at around 2pm that he was taken to the Valelevu Health Centre.

“We were married for six years and I would always cherish the time we had together.”

Police spokesperson Ana Naisoro said: “An employee was driving a forklift stacking pallets containing reels of plastics when the pallets accidently fell on the victim.

“He was rushed to the Valelevu Health Centre but was pronounced dead on arrival. Investigations continue.”
