The presence of peacekeepers in any country undergoing conflicts significantly reduces the risk of renewed warfare and casualties, says a senior Republic of Fiji Military Forces officer.
Speaking during the World Peacekeepers Day celebrations at the Returned Servicemen’s League (RSL) Club in Lautoka yesterday, Major Waka Naivalu said the presence of the United Nations peacekeepers had also increased chances of combatants negotiating a ceasefire.
He also said the risk of civilians being killed are reduced.
