Fiji Roads Authority chief executive officer Kamal Prasad said the progress of periodic road maintenance works such as road repainting, compacting and sealing has slowed down.

However, routine road works will continue until the next financial year.

“There’s routine maintenance and the periodic maintenance. Routine maintenance are things like grass cutting, drain cleaning and pothole patching or re-sheeting, those are our routine kind of maintenance,” he said.

“We started that programme of sealed rehab and unsealed rehabs and it’s all population and vehicle number driven, wherever there are more vehicles or it is population driven, that’s where we have more effort but it doesn’t mean we don’t go to the areas with fewer vehicles, but it is proportionate when we are dealing with the level of service the road has.”

He said FRA’s road programmes were in effect at the moment.

“The budget was $376,744million for this financial year; there are some redeployments. It’s not specifically that the Western Division has this much money or the Central Division has this much money,” he said.

“The number of road works done by FRA will depend on how much funding there is.”
