Picnic Trip Gone Wrong, 3 Dead In Lau Waters

A 23ft fiberglass has capsized in the Tuvuca waters, midway to a Tavunuku picnic spot on Tuvuca Island in Lau, has claimed the lives of three people.
The three deceased were amongst 16 passengers on board the fiberglass boat heading to a Tavunuku picnic spot on Tuvuca Island.
In an incident report from the Rescue Coordination Centre (RCC) Fiji, revealed that the 23ft boat captained by a Josateki Suvi, left Tuvuca Village around 8am for a picnic at Tuvuna Island.

"At 1500hrs the villagers sent another fiberglass boat to check on the picnickers and discovered that the boat had capsized whilst on its way to the Island, whereby 12 people were rescued, one is still missing, and 3 deceased," the incident report stated.
"Villagers are still searching for the missing person. Bodies of the deceased are now kept at Tuvuca Healthcenter."
The Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji has been notified of the incident.
Chief executive officer Joweli Cawaki said MSAF will follow up with Fiji Navy RCC Operations and Police to ascertain and investigate the MSAF Safety compliance on the boat and the qualification of the boat master.
