The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has endorsed the pilot water purification project on Taveuni Island.

This project is spearheaded by the South Pacific Foundation (SPF) to provide clean and safe water to communities in Naweni, Cakaudrove Province and Malua on Taveuni.

The foundation specialises in manufacturing water purifiers using readily available natural resources such as rocks, gravel and charcoal.

These purifiers are intended to purify water effectively and sustainably.

The ministry is supporting the replication of this concept in villages throughout the Northern Division.

Founder Ratu Lavisai Kabakoro, said: “Our goal is to provide clean, safe drinking water to communities in the north.

“The beauty of our purifier systems lies in their simplicity and reliance on natural materials found in our surroundings.”

The initiative is a crucial step towards increasing access to clean drinking water in remote Fijian villages.

The project’s goal is to reduce the prevalence of waterborne illnesses and improve health outcomes by encouraging the adoption of chemical-free water treatment technologies.

Line minister Dr Atonio Lalabalavu paid visits to the Somosomo Village and the Koroqele Reservoir last week.
