Alexandra Melody Pitcher expressed her gratitude to the Fiji National University (FNU) for offering essential qualifications to the local community in Nauru.

Pitcher, who is also the reigning Miss Nauru, represented the Republic of Nauru in the 2023 Pacific Islands earlier this year.

The 24-year-old currently works as a Project Administrator for the Community Alternative Pathways Programme at the Department of Multicultural Affairs (DMA).

“The Department of Multicultural Affairs worked directly with the team from FNU to facilitate training to the many participants, the affected individuals at the Nauru Regional Processing Centre, and the members of the community,” Pitcher said excitedly.

“I am grateful to the partnership between FNU and DMA because it is just not a community outreach programme for us as this allows us to upskill the locals.”

Pitcher, having worked closely with the team from FNU, said she looks forward to the upcoming projects between the University and DMA.

She worked closely with the FNU’s National Training and Productivity Centre (NTPC) Trainer, Inoke Rasau, to assist in the delivery of the Household and Sanitary Plumbing short course.

“It has been great working with the NTPC Trainer, Master Inoke. He has a hands-on approach to teaching which enabled the students to become eager to learn.”

The current Miss Nauru became involved in the Household and Sanitary Plumbing short course to challenge the stigma that surrounded traditional gender roles.

“Additionally, in my other role as Miss Nauru, I also wanted to challenge the stigma around traditional gender roles by being involved with the plumbing short course,” she said.

“If it is a life skill, there is no gender to it, it is a skill that is needed.”
