PM Awaits Notification on Malimali Resignation as EC Chairperson

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says he has yet to receive a formal notification on Barbara Malimali's resignation as chairperson of the Electoral Commission (EC).

This as Ms Malimali was announced the Commissioner of the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC) on September 4.

Her appointment has been at the center of controversy because she was und investigation by FICAC.

"The resignation should come to the commission, the commission appointed her as the chair of the Electorate Commission," Mr Rabuka said.

"We should be notified. As far as I'm concerned, as of now the secretary of the commission has not notified the chair. I will wait for him to notify me."

Ms Malimali confirmed she had resigne as chairperson of EC, but did not provide further details.

Role

COC is a mandated advisory body under the 2013 Constitution that is responsible for recommending names, and rendering advice to the President for appointments to key positions in public offices.

This includes the chairperson and members of the Human Rights and Anti-Discrimination Commission, the chairperson and members of the Electoral Commission, the Supervisor of Elections, Parliament Secretary-General, Public Service Commission chairperson and members, Commissioner of Police, Fiji Correction Services Commissioner, Republic of Fiji Military Forces Commander, Auditor-General, and Governor of the Reserve Bank of Fiji (RBF).
