Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka says he will not reassign the portfolios formerly held by former Deputy Prime Minister Manoa Kamikamica while court proceedings against him are ongoing.

Mr Rabuka is currently overseeing the Trade, Co-operatives, Small and Medium Enterprises, and Communications portfolio, in addition to his roles as Prime Minister and Minister for Foreign Affairs, Civil Service, and Public Enterprise.

He said any redistribution of responsibilities would have to wait until the legal process is complete.

“Right now it’s no point doing that because the court case has just started,” Mr Rabuka said.

“It could take a very short time or maybe a long time.”

Mr Rabuka said any decision on portfolio distribution would depend on the progress of the court case.

“Depending on how we anticipate it running out, I will have to decide whether I power some to the various ministers who are already operating in the same sort of interest and portfolios,” he said.

Mr Kamikamica stepped down from Cabinet on Tuesday following charges laid by the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).

He faces one count of perjury and one count of providing false information to a public servant, stemming from an investigation linked to the Commission of Inquiry into the appointment of Barbara Malimali as FICAC Commissioner.

Mr Rabuka confirmed earlier that Mr Kamikamica remains the deputy party leader of the People’s Alliance despite stepping down from his Cabinet roles.

The Government will wait for the court process to conclude before making any further decisions regarding Mr Kamikamica’s political future.
