Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has expressed deep sorrow at the untimely passing of the Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Isoa Talemaibua.

Mr Talemaibua passed away after a short illness on Saturday aged 49.

Mr Rabuka was formally informed of Mr Talemaibua’s death yesterday by Minister Sakiasi Ditoka and his delegation today.

“The late Permanent Secretary served Fiji with distinction, dedication, and a deep sense of duty. His passing is a great loss not only to the Ministry but also to the entire civil service and the nation,” the Prime Minister said in a statement.

Mr Talemaibua, who had led the ministry since 2023, was remembered by Government for his years of service and his commitment to advancing rural and maritime development.

Government also issued a tribute, describing Ratu Isoa as a dedicated public servant and a distinguished financial expert whose career was devoted to the service of Fiji.

“Before his appointment as Permanent Secretary, he held senior roles within the Ministry of Finance, including Head of Budget and Planning, where he helped shape national fiscal policies and budget allocations that contributed significantly to Fiji’s economic growth.

“He drew upon a rich background in the private sector, giving him a nuanced perspective on financial management and economic development. This combined experience enabled him to approach governance and public resource allocation with balance, vision, and integrity.

“As Permanent Secretary for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management, Ratu Isoa worked tirelessly to enhance service delivery to Fiji’s rural and maritime communities and championed the country’s disaster preparedness and resilience agenda. His leadership, professionalism, and steadfast commitment to the public good will be deeply missed by all who worked with him and benefited from his work.”

Government will present its reguregu on Wednesday afternoon at his village of Matainoco, ahead of his burial on Friday.
