PM to reopen Laxmi Narayan Mandir in Tavua today

Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka will today officiate at the reopening of the Laxmi Narayan Mandir in Tavua, marking a major milestone for the community following years of rebuilding after Tropical Cyclone Winston.
A large crowd is expected at the ceremony, which will take place at noon.
Trustee Umesh Prasad said the temple, established before 1960, was badly damaged during the cyclone when its roof was torn off.

“We are very grateful to one of the sons of Tavua, architect Vijay Sharma, who resides in Suva and rebuilt the project,” Mr Prasad said.
He said the rebuilding cost ran into millions.
“We are grateful to Mr Sharma for taking on this project. It took time, but it reflects his commitment to quality.”
Mr Prasad said the reopening marked the highlight of a week-long Pran Pratishtha Mahotsav held from April 19 to 25.
Activities include a Ganga Yatra, daily pooja and yagya ceremonies, and evening cultural programmes.
Meanwhile, the Hindi Parishad Fiji (Western Branch), in conjunction with the High Commission of India in Fiji, Tavua Primary School and Toko Sanatan Primary School, will host a Baal Mandali Ramayan Sammelan on Sunday.
Tavua Primary School head teacher Gulshard Ali said the event would bring together children from across the Western Division, from Rakiraki to Sigatoka.
“This is the fifth year of the Baal Mandali Sammelan,” Mr Ali said.
“They will recite from the Ramayan and sing devotional songs. The programme aims to encourage young people to take part in religious and cultural activities.”
About 500 participants are expected. The Indian High Commissioner to Fiji will be the chief guest.
