Graduate's second chance pays off

After nearly two years away from education, Vika Qiliqili has graduated with an Information Technology qualification from Pacific Polytech, proving that determination can overcome even the toughest setbacks.

Ms Qiliqili graduated at Vunimono Hall in Nausori yesterday after rebuilding her education following personal challenges that forced her to leave school.

She attended Nakavika Primary School and Namosi Secondary School before enrolling at Fiji National University's Natabua campus. However, personal circumstances forced her to return to her village, where she spent nearly two years away from formal education.

Determined to continue her studies, Ms Qiliqili enrolled in Pacific Polytech's Information Technology programme in 2025, describing the decision as life changing.

"Joining Pacific Polytech was one thing that I've been appreciative about," she said.

Ms Qiliqili said she found a second family at the institution, with the encouragement and support of fellow students helping her reach graduation.

She said watching her parents work tirelessly on the family farm inspired her to keep pursuing her education.

"Whenever I returned to the village and saw my parents working so hard, it gave me the courage to continue my studies," Ms Qiliqili said.

She now hopes to further her education and create a better future for her family.

"My dream is to provide my parents with a better home and repay them for everything they have sacrificed to help me become who I am today," she said.

Her achievement stands as a testament to resilience, determination and the value of second chances in education.
