Matavelo make history

Ba Methodist High School will make history when it faces RKS in the Vodafone Deans Under-17 semi-final at HFC Stadium in Suva on Saturday.

Known as ‘Matavelo’, Ba Methodist secured its place in the last four after a remarkable comeback against Gospel High School, winning 22-19 in their quarter-final at Garvey Park, Tavua, last Saturday.

The side trailed 12-5 at halftime before fighting back to seal victory and earn its first Deans U17 semi-final appearance.

Head coach David Wise, said the achievement was a proud moment for the school and the wider Ba community.

“This is a historical moment for Ba Methodist High School.

“Reaching the Deans semi-final for the first time is something the school, the players and the community can be very proud of,” he said.

“The boys have earned this opportunity through their commitment, discipline, and teamwork throughout the season.

“It is a breakthrough that reflects months of hard work, discipline, sacrifice and unity from the players, parents, teachers, old scholars, Ba Rugby Union and supporters.”

Wise said the players understood the responsibility that came with representing the school and the wider Ba community.

“These boys understand that they are representing the school, their families, the old scholars and the people of Ba,” he said.

“We have reminded them to remain humble, respect every opponent and continue playing with pride and discipline.”

The historic run has also brought the wider Ba Methodist community together, with parents, guardians, teachers, old scholars, sponsors and supporters playing a key role throughout the season.

Despite reaching uncharted territory, Wise said the team remained focused on the challenge ahead, with training centred on teamwork, communication, fitness and mental preparation.
