Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has urged legal practitioners to find ways to extend their role beyond the conventional courtroom battles, to virtual landscapes where scams lurk.

He made this statement at the opening of the 25th Attorney-General conference at the Sheraton Fiji Golf and Beach Resort in Denarau on Friday.

“Beyond the commercial relationships and legal opportunities, your responsibility as legal practitioners extends to the protection of individuals,” he said.

“Your skills as legal professionals become invaluable tools in the fight against digital deception.”

Mr Rabuka said that this can be an important development in law and profession given the development in digital connectivity and technology.

“For instance, this age of digital connectivity provides unprecedented opportunities for collaboration but also for exploration. As lawyers, we have a unique opportunity to extend our reach beyond borders, forging connections and exploring legal opportunities.”

Vulnerable communities

Mr Rabuka acknowledged the evolution of platforms that lawyers now inhabit.

“Then there is the role of lawyers as guardians of justice, particularly for the most vulnerable in our communities. In today’s world, grappling with the alarming prevalence of sexual crimes, especially those against women and children, the duty of lawyers becomes even more crucial.”
