Police operations will be beefing up on their enforcement of drinking and disorderly as well as other petty crimes that give rise to other crimes.

Fiji Police Force spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed this yesterday.

Ms Naisoro’s comments followed the statistics of 22 arrests made for liquor related offences last weekend from June 13 to 15.

According to Police statistics, among the 22 arrests, 13 were for drinking liquor in public places while nine were drunk and disorderly.

A yaqona businessman in Suva, Semesa Tuilau, 70, is concerned of the increasing drug problem among youths today.

“The increase in children openly taking drugs and participating in criminal activities is worrying,” Mr Tuilau, a grandfather of five, said.

Sharing the same sentiments, a student studying at the University of the South Pacific (USP) who prefers to remain anonymous is also hoping for more Police presence around the university area.

She was a victim of theft after her bag and phone were stolen one evening while buying dinner from a BBQ stall.

While calls for more Police presence continue, the Nadroga-Navosa Chamber of Commerce and Industry (NNCC) argued that proposed investments for police funding were not merely expenditures but strategic investments in the safety, stability, and economic prosperity of the Sigatoka region.
