Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu has distanced himself from the decision to amend the FICAC Act but noted that the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption has been given extensive powers under the law.
Mr Tudravu said Police could only assist the anti‑corruption body with investigations.
Under the previous Government, the FICAC Act was enacted in 2007, allowing the commission, under its commissioner, to investigate, charge, and prosecute corruption. Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka has announced that the Government will move to amend the Act this year.
When asked whether the Act limits the authority of the Police Force, the Commissioner said: “We are empowered to enforce the law under the Crimes Act, and they (FICAC) also have more powers given to them by law. I don’t see anything that is affecting our presence in regard to that.”

Meanwhile, Mr Tudravu said the Force would consider developing a whistleblower policy, adding that Police would align themselves with the Government’s position on the matter.
