Last night 35 new COVID-19 cases were announced by Permanent Secretary for Health and Medical Services, Dr James Fong.

Of the 35, two are Police officers; one  is part of the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), at the Nasinu Police Station.

Eight primary contacts of this officer have been swabbed and are under self-isolation. The station has been fumigated as well.

This was also confirmed by the Acting Commissioner of Police, Rusiate Tudravu.

Meanwhile, while delivering his national statement in self-isolation at his home, Dr Fong asked Fijians not to put their guards down.

Dr Fong is one of the potential primary contacts of the medical team members who contracted COVID-19.

He has been tested twice and results were negative.

“I also want to be clear: There is nothing reassuring about the low numbers of severe disease and death recorded so far,” he said.

“This is the same variant that has inflicted mass death upon many other nations.”

Government assistance

Meanwhile, Government yesterday paid out around $11.2 million to more than 224,000 Fijians as part of its $50 cash assistance program for the informal sector.

Eligible individuals have been provided these funds through their M-PAiSA or MyCash digital wallets and recipients will be able to withdraw cash or purchase goods directly from any registered M-PAiSA and MyCash outlets.

This new assistance is in addition to the $90 cash assistance paid out earlier to 118,000 households with a total payout of $10.6 million.
