The body of a man in his 50’s was discovered by Police on Sunday afternoon.

Police Spokesperson Ana Naisoro confirmed that the man drowned while diving for freshwater mussels on Saturday.

The alleged incident occurred at the Baulevu River, near Wainisasa Settlement in Nausori.

Resident Kaminieli Rokodrugu said it was not the first drowning incident that had occurred in the river.

“We heard the news that a man had drowned here while collecting mussels on Saturday night,” he said.

“Police found the body lying motionless on a stack of bamboo.

“He drifted nearly a kilometer from where he was collecting mussels to where he was found and that was a long way from where he was diving for mussels.”

He said residents flocked to the river bank on Sunday afternoon when the discovery was made.

“We had his whole family here and police boats were patrolling the area during the search.

“Police also had drones to assist in the search.”
