With just four days remaining until Christmas, Police have issued a stern warning to motorists after recording 29 drunk driving arrests in the last 48 hours.
Among those taken into custody was a serving police officer, highlighting a "zero tolerance" approach as traffic authorities ramp up holiday enforcement.
Despite repeated public safety campaigns, the Fiji Police Force is concerned that drivers continue to "gamble" with their lives and the lives of innocent road users.

“We are a few days away from Christmas, and we don’t want a time normally associated with joy to be one of pain and sorrow, as a result of someone’s failure to just say no to drinking and driving," a police statement read.
"The overindulgence of alcohol is a threat not only on our roads but in every aspect of our lives."
Authorities confirmed that traffic units have been instructed to show no leniency, regardless of the driver’s profession or status.
Holiday shopping and home security
Beyond the roads, police are urging the public to remain vigilant as the "last-minute rush" for Christmas shopping begins.
Officers have spent the past week visiting business operators to brief staff on the risk of opportunistic crimes during the busy period.
Police have issued the following safety reminders for the public:
- Be alert: Stay vigilant while shopping in crowded areas to avoid pickpockets or "smash and grab" thefts.
- Secure the home: Before heading out, double-check that all doors, windows, and entry points are locked.
- Report suspicious activity: If you see something out of the ordinary, notify authorities immediately.
"Safety and security is a shared responsibility," the police statement read.
"By staying alert and making responsible choices, we can ensure a peaceful festive season for everyone."
