A serving police officer who also serves as a pastor is under investigation after a video of his sermon condemning Diwali celebrations went viral this week.

Hindu Unity Organisation founder Sandeep Narayan confirmed that a formal complaint had been lodged against Pastor Kartik Naidu, accusing him of promoting religious hatred and discrimination.

“A video recording of his sermon clearly shows language that violates the principles of religious freedom, neutrality, and public service ethics enshrined in our Constitution,” Mr Narayan said.

He added that no civil or public servant should engage in speech that spreads division or disrespects any faith or community.

Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu confirmed that both the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and Internal Affairs were investigating the officer’s conduct.

“CID is investigating the matter, with Internal Affairs conducting an internal inquiry into the officer’s behaviour,” Mr Tudravu said.

Reverend Simione Tugi, General Secretary of the Fiji Evangelical Fellowship Church, urged all preachers to avoid discriminatory remarks.

“We must maintain respect for one another as brothers and sisters and promote unity as one nation,” Reverend Tugi said.

Social Empowerment and Education Programme (SEEP) and Human Rights Commissioner Chantelle Khan also condemned the remarks, which allegedly described Hindu and Muslim festivals as ‘demonic activities.’

“Our diversity is our strength, and every Fijian has the right to practise their faith with dignity and respect. No individual or institution is above the law,” Ms Khan said.

Shree Sanatan Dharm Purohit Brahman Maha Sabha Fiji president, Pundit Satnesh Sharma, called on citizens to remain calm and united.

“Such comments are inflammatory and disrespectful to Fiji’s multicultural society,” he said, confirming that the Sabha had also lodged a formal complaint with the relevant authorities.
