Assistant Commissioner of Police (Crime) Mesake Waqa has revealed that people of interest in the two major drug busts in Nadi have gone off the grid.

This is after police got wind that some of their own had provided information to suspects of the pending raid.

ACP Waqa said his team was fully aware that the network was so organised, that the persons of interest were also being tipped off by their very “own officers before the scheduled raid”.

When officers arrive at the scene, the person of interest is not there and goes off the grid, including wiping out traces on social media and even phone contacts, etc.

“This is something that we expect to encounter during this type of high-magnitude investigation,” he said.

“We will take serious considerations once the investigations line is crossed,” said ACP Waqa.

The new development follows the ongoing investigation where police seized three tonnes of drugs in a vacant house in Legalega, and another major bust of 1.1 tonnes was carried out in Maqalevu, off Denarau Rd, in Nadi in a space of a week.
