Police probe alleged drowning of three-year-old in Taveuni

Police are investigating the alleged drowning of a three-year-old boy in Welagi Village, Taveuni.

The child is believed to have been left alone at home while his guardian went to a nearby shop.

Police said the boy was reported missing when the guardian returned, prompting a search.

He was later found floating in the sea.

A post-mortem examination will be conducted to determine the cause of death, while investigations will also examine possible negligence.

Authorities have reminded parents and guardians not to leave young children unsupervised, especially with the school holidays approaching.

They said children should not be left in the care of other children and urged close supervision by a responsible adult.
