Police in Ba are investigating a case in which a senior citizen was allegedly robbed while withdrawing cash from an ATM.

The incident occurred at about 10 am on Saturday when 81-year-old Mani Lal of Vatulaulau Stage 2 in Ba, went to withdraw his government assistance from a BSP ATM in town.

Because of his age, Mr Lal sought help from a person nearby whom he trusted. The suspect allegedly withdrew the cash and fled. Further unauthorised transactions were later made.

Police confirmed a complaint was lodged on Monday and said banks have their own verification procedures.

“I normally ask someone in line to assist me, which I did, but that person returned the card without the cash,” Mr Lal said.

“This is something I did not expect to experience at this age. It is very sad.”

His granddaughter, Swastika Sahai, said her grandfather is worried and traumatised, which he shared with the family on Sunday night.

“At 81, he has had to run between banks and the police station, obtain CCTV footage, and endure immense stress, all while trying to reclaim his hard-earned money,” she said.

National Senior Citizens Committee chairman Vineel Nand expressed concern over the incident and said the committee strongly condemned the act.

Mr Nand called on the police to act swiftly, apprehend the culprit, and ensure harsher penalties.

The incident highlights growing concerns about the safety and dignity of elderly citizens, who are increasingly becoming targets of exploitation.

“We urge the public to remain vigilant and come together to protect our seniors. Every elderly person deserves to live with dignity, respect, and safety,” he said.
