Police probe Sunbeam bus accident, two passengers under medical watch

Two out of the 16 passengers involved in a bus accident at Tavarau, Ba are under observation at the Ba Aspen Hospital.

Divisional Police Commander West Senior Superintendent of Police(SSP) Iakobo Vaisewa confirmed that the accident took place at 5.20pm on Tuesday.

“The Sunbeam Transport bus overturned at Tavarau ,we can confirm receiving the report , there were 16 passengers but 17 people were taken to the hospital, this included the driver, two are under observation while the rest were treated and sent home,” he said.

The bus was traveling towards Ba on its way to Suva.

 

Message from Police

SSP Vaisewa urged Public Service Vehicle (PSV) drivers to be mindful of their passengers’ safety.

“Always consider your passengers’ safety while driving, and also drive within the speed limit. Regarding this incident, I cannot confirm whether it was due to speeding or a mechanical fault; this will be determined after investigations,” he said.

“ Do not use telephones and do not allow yourself to be distracted by other things when you are driving. Always concentrate on your driving.”

When this masthead contacted Sunbeam Transport for a comment yesterday, a representative said questions would need to be asked in person as per protocol.

However, upon arrival at the company yard in Lautoka, the representative declined to comment.
